The History Of Calder Casino Miami Gardens Florida

Summertime horse racing in Florida was first proposed by real estate developer Stephen A. Calder in the mid-1960s, and the Florida Legislature acted on his recommendation in 1965 to make it a reality.

Tropical Park Race Track in Miami hosted a fall meet and Hialeah Park and Gulfstream Park in Broward County hosted winter/spring meets prior to this period. Summertime racing at Stephen Calder was granted a permit in 1970, but the meet was held at Tropical Park instead since construction at Stephen Calder had not yet been completed.

Calder Race Course opened for competition on May 6th, 1971 and on taking over Tropical Park, William L. McKnight indicated that he planned to close the track and move the dates to Calder Race Course, where he was one of the major investors and in 1972, the last race was held at Tropical Park.

Renovations and additions, as well as two purchases, occurred during the decade of the ’80s in this area. First, Bertram R. Firestone purchased the equipment, and then Kawasaki Leasings, Inc. bought it. The first “Festival of the Sun” took place in 1992.

Until 1997, simulcasting hadn’t been introduced (so bets could be placed at Calder on races from other tracks). The track saw a huge increase in the number of purses on the handle. Calder Race Course was purchased by Churchill Downs Incorporated in January 1999 for an estimated $86 million. Calder Race Course Miami Florida

The “Florida Million” and the “Summit of Speed” were originally run on this track in the first decade of the new century but after moving from Lake Lucerne, it’s now located elsewhere.

Up until 2003, Calder was an unincorporated suburb of Miami Gardens and Miami-Dade County’s third-largest city.

Since its inception in 2000, Calder’s Summit of Speed has produced numerous Breeders’ Cup and Eclipse Award winners. (In American horse racing, the Eclipse Award is the highest distinction.)

The Day of Speed was the most significant in Calder’s history when over $10.8 million was bet on the tournament in 2004. Lost in the Fog won the Calder Stakes in 2005 but was beaten in the Breeders’ Cup later that year.

Calder changed its name to Calder Casino & Race Course in the fall of 2009 and celebrated its official debut in January 2010.

Who Owns The Calder Casino Miami

The Stronach Group and CDI struck a deal after competing against one other at nearby Gulfstream Park in 2013 and 2014. The Stronach Group will run Calder’s racing activities, while CDI would operate the Calder Casino.

Gulfstream Park West, a two-month meet at Calder in the fall, was announced as a result of the deal. The track’s official racing programme code was changed from CRC to GPW as a result of the revisions.

CDI removed 1,400 stalls in an area earmarked for non-racing commercial redevelopment in April of 2015 and it was announced in July 2015 that the Calder grandstand, owned by CDI, would be closed to the public except for racing officials for the 2015 Gulfstream Park West meet and would be dismantled following the meet’s conclusion.

Demolition was completed in October 2016!

Today, the Calder Casino & Race Course is a thriving casino in Miami Gardens especially on weekends with fantastic food, drink and a huge selection of gambling options, which makes for a great night out.
