Shepard Broad established Bay Harbor Islands on April 28, 1947 and the two islands that make up this area, the West Island and the East Island, were formerly known as Broadview and Bay Harbor.

Parks and fine eateries can also be found in Bay Harbor Islands but residents also have easy access to Bal Harbour and the remainder of Miami Beach, as well as all the attractions of Greater Miami through a quick drive across the Biscayne Bay Bridge.

Located in Miami-Dade County, Bay Harbor Islands is a small city with a current population of around 6000 between North Miami on the mainland and Bal Harbour Village and Surfside in the east. The wealthy community of Indian Creek can also be found to the south.

The town covers a total area of around 0.6 square miles of which 0.4 square miles is land and 0.2 square miles is water.
