Since its construction in 1967, La Ermita de la Caridad, the modern conical building overlooking the bay, houses the shrine dedicated to the Virgin of Charity, the patron saint of Cuba, has become a symbol of compassion and kindness in the city of Miami.

A massive mural depicting the history of the Roman Catholic church in Cuba was created by Teok Carrasco and his assistant Orlando Cabaas and hangs over the altar and several statues, including a contemporary take on the Virgin Mary by Cuban sculptor Antuan, stand guard outside the sanctuary.

The Ermita de la Caridad is a beacon-shaped shrine at 27 meters in height, dedicated to the Cuban exile community in Miami and all ceremonies held there are performed with the congregation facing Cuba.
