Florida’s Coral Gables is home to the private research institution known variously as the University of Miami (UM, UMiami, Miami, U of M, and The U). There are 12 colleges and schools at the university, with nearly 350 academic majors and programmes as of 2021.
These include the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine in Miami’s Health District, the Law School on the main campus, and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science on Virginia Key with research facilities in southern Miami-Dade County.

Coral Gables Campus – University Of Miami
Located in Coral Gables, 7 miles (11 km) south of Downtown Miami, the main campus of the University of Miami covers 240 acres (0.97 km2). The University of Miami’s main campus in Coral Gables is home to seven schools and two colleges, including the University of Miami School of Law, where the vast majority of UM’s academic offerings are located.
There are more than 5,900,000 square feet (550,000 square metres) of building space on the site, with a total estimated worth of more than $657 million. In the middle of campus is Lake Osceola, a freshwater lake that was created by man in the late 1940s.
The campus theatre of the University of Miami is called the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre, after Jerry Herman, a graduate of the university who wrote the music and lyrics for such Broadway blockbusters as Hello Dolly! and La Cage aux Folles.
On the northwest side of the main Coral Gables campus sits the John C. Gifford Arboretum, a campus arboretum and botanical garden. The School of Architecture at the University of Miami hosts periodic architecture and design exhibitions at the Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center.
The University Station stop on the Miami Metrorail line is conveniently placed just a few blocks from the Coral Gables campus. The University of Miami is only one of several locations in Miami that may be reached by Metro from Downtown, Brickell, Coconut Grove, the Civic Center, and even Miami International Airport.
Trains run every 15 minutes from Downtown and Brickell to the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus and during the academic year, the Hurry ‘Canes shuttle service runs two routes on campus, including to University Station and weekend routes to various off-campus stores and facilities.
An additional shuttle route provides service to the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science campus on Virginia Key and Vizcaya Station. Zipcar is available on campus as well.
There are now 5,415 students enrolled at the University of Miami’s main campus in Coral Gables. First-year students make up a large share of this group (89 percent of new freshmen live on campus compared with 39 percent of all undergraduates).
Students pursuing an undergraduate degree are the only ones allowed to live in the university’s five residential colleges and one apartment-style living area.
Among the residential colleges, you’ll find two dorms and three suites. The “Freshman Towers” allude to the McDonald and Pentland Towers at Hecht Residential College and the Walsh and Rosborough Towers at Stanford Residential College.
Eaton Residential College, which was built specifically for female students, and Mahoney/Pearson Residential Colleges both have suite-style housing, with every two double-occupancy rooms connected to a communal bathroom.
Students at the University of Miami can live in one of five residential colleges or at University Village, a complex of seven buildings offering apartment-style yearly contract housing with complete cooking amenities. Formerly accessible to graduate and School of Law students until July 31, 2009, the University Village is now restricted to upperclassmen only.
There has been no graduate student housing on the Coral Gables campus since this date. Next to the intramural fields on San Amaro Drive is what the students have dubbed “Fraternity Row” at the University of Miami. Suites on campus are reserved for sororities, although they are not for living in by sorority members.
There are 1,115 underclassmen, juniors, and seniors living in the 25 buildings that make up Lakeside Village. In August of 2020, this $153 million renovation was finished.

Medical School Campus – University Of Miami
Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami is the largest hospital in the United States, with 1,547 beds, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Miami’s Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.
Located on Northwest 10th Avenue in Miami’s Health District, the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami educates one thousand students each year in a wide range of medical specialisations.
The University of Miami Jackson Memorial Medical Center facility spans 70 acres (280,000 square metres) within its larger 153-acre (620,000 square metre) setting.
University of Miami Hospital, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital all belong to the University of Miami and are part of the medical centre.
The medical centre includes Jackson Memorial Hospital, Holtz Children’s Hospital, and the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center; all are associated with the University of Miami but are not controlled by the university.
The original City of Miami Hospital, known as “The Alamo,” opened in 1918 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it the beating heart of the School of Medicine campus.
The University of Miami’s 15-story, 300,000-square-foot Clinical Research Building and Wellness Center was completed in 2006. After purchasing Cedars Medical Center in 2007, the University of Miami now operates it under the name University of Miami Hospital.
The Jackson Memorial Hospital, where students and staff from the University of Miami School of Medicine practise, is located in close proximity to the hospital.
In 2009, the University of Miami constructed a nine-story biomedical research building with a laboratory and office space of 182,000 square feet (16,000 square metres) and certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
Next to the medical campus, the University of Miami has built a 2,000,000 sq ft (190,000 m2) Life Science Park with offices and laboratories. The University Station on the Coral Gables campus and the Civic Center Station on the medical campus are directly connected by the Metrorail.
Rosenstiel School Of Marine And Atmospheric Science Campus – University Of Miami
Located on Virginia Key near the edge of Biscayne Bay, the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science is the only subtropical marine and atmospheric research centre in the mainland United States, covering an area of 18 acres (73,000 m2).
The university also features the largest hurricane simulation tank in the world.
On Rickenbacker Causeway, next to the Rosenstiel School, is the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (a government research facility).
On the eastern side of Barbados, the Rosenstiel School has a research site called the Barbados Atmospheric Chemistry Observatory (BACO), which tracks the movement of Saharan dust particles over the Atlantic Ocean throughout the summer months and into the Caribbean Basin and South America.
In 1945, when work began on Rickenbacker Causeway to make Virginia Key accessible by car, the school was founded. The county of Miami-Dade provided the university land on the island next to Miami Seaquarium in exchange for the institution’s agreement to run the aquarium during the year the Causeway was built.
Because of the referendum’s failure to pass bonds in order to fund the aquarium’s construction, the university leased the land in 1951 instead. South And Richmond Campuses – University Of Miami
In order to accommodate the postwar growth in students, the University of Miami purchased the former Richmond Naval Air Station in southern Miami, 12 mi (19 km) south of the main campus, in 1946. After World War II, the campus was purchased and used for two academic years, accommodating around 1,100 students (mainly freshmen).
The University of Miami converted it into a laboratory in 1948. There were a few buildings that the CIA rented in the ’60s. In 1948, a 350-acre (1,400,000 m2) area called the South Campus Grove was designated for use in agricultural and horticultural research and study.
Twenty years of radioactive isotope use in biological research at the University of Miami’s South Campus led to the burial of irradiated animals and other things. The University of Miami agreed to pay the United States Army Corps of Engineers $393,473 in August 2006 to cover cleanup expenses incurred due to the 1980 Superfund law.
The Global Public Health Research Group, the Miami Institute for Human Genomics, and the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory are all currently located in its six buildings, which total a total of 63,800 square feet (5,930 square meters)[94]. Although the University of Miami had intended to construct a south campus there, they sold the 80-acre plot in 2014.
The Richmond campus is located on a 76-acre (310,000 square metre) site that was once the United States Naval Observatory Secondary National Time Standard Facility and featured preexisting structures and a 20-meter antenna for Very-long-baseline interferometry.

The Special Collections Division of the library and the Cuban Heritage Collection are home to rare books, maps, manuscript collections, and the University of Miami Archives.
Rare books, maps, and manuscripts were among the many items donated to the university and Miami Dade College libraries by the Jay I. Kislak Foundation in January 2017. The Kislak Center at the University of Miami was converted from a lecture hall to contain the foundation’s gift as well as the existing special collections and university records.
Letters written by Columbus on his first journey aboard the Nia are included in the Kislak Foundation collection, with the earliest editions dating back to February 15, 1493.

The Farmer School of Business (FSB) is located in a brand new, state-of-the-art, LEED-certified building that spans over 210,000 square feet (20,000 square metres). Robert A.M. Stern, a prominent revivalist architect, was responsible for designing the FSB building, which opened in 2009 for student use.

The College of Education, Health & Society is home to six distinct academic disciplines (Educational Leadership, Educational Psychology, Family Science & Social Work, Kinesiology & Health, Sports Leadership & Management, and Teacher Education) that collectively award a total of 18 different Bachelor’s degrees.
There were around 3,500 full- and part-time undergraduates enrolled as of the fall 2009 semester.
The College of Engineering and Computing at Oxford has been in a brand new $22 million engineering facility since 2007, where they now offer 10 approved majors.
Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering; Computer Science and Software Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering; and Interdisciplinary programmes make up the college’s five departments.
