The town of Miami Lakes spans the whole “great bend” of the Palmetto Expressway in northwest Miami-Dade County. The Town spans around 6.8 square miles and is located roughly 16 miles north of Downtown Miami and 10 miles from Miami International Airport.
Officially, the area is bounded by NW 170th Street and the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826), to the north; NW 138th Street, to the south; NW 57th Avenue (Red Road), to the east; and I-75, to the west.
Forty percent of Miami Lakes’ total land area of 4,363 acres is devoted to housing, making it the town’s primary land use. 13% of the land area is devoted to light industrial and office parks and roughly 11% is made up of lakes and canals, making these the other two primary land uses in the city.
Located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, Miami Lakes is a municipality and a former census-designated place that serves as a suburb of Miami. In the most recent census, in 2018, 31,628 individuals called Miami Lakes home.
What Is The History Of Miami Lakes
Sengra (now the Graham Companies) began construction on the property in 1962 on land that had belonged to Florida state senator Ernest “Cap” Graham. Many years ago, the Grahams predicted that the project would take 30 years to complete, but they’re still working on it now.
Unlike the surrounding areas, which have treeless streets laid out in a grid and rectangular lakes, Lester Collins designed the original Miami Lakes development east of the Palmetto Expressway with winding tree-shaded roadways and multiple winding lakes.
This initial development included neighborhood shopping complexes, parks and a town center known as Main Street and is located on the eastern edge of the newly designated town of Miami Lakes.
The Graham family still owns a sizable chunk of Miami Lakes, including numerous residential and commercial properties as well as a large chunk of undeveloped acreage. The town’s compact layout, narrow streets, and plenty of green space made it an early inspiration for the New Urbanism movement.
The Town of Miami Lakes became the 31st municipality in Miami-Dade County when it was founded in December 2000. Miami Lakes, one of the newest municipalities in the County, is home to over 1,100 businesses and 30,000 people.
Over 50 years ago, while the Graham family was developing what had been their dairy farm, work began on the Master Plan. The Grahams planned their city with decades of expansion, construction, and changing market conditions in mind, setting it apart from many other cities and towns that sprang up in the 1960s.
To design the blueprint for what would become the heart of Miami Lakes, the city hired Lester Collins, a former dean of the Harvard School of Architecture. Collins established the framework for a multi-use village that combines residential, commercial and industrial components and residents chose to incorporate as a municipality on December 5th, 2000.
