The University of Miami’s collegiate football team is known as the Hurricanes who play in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and in the NCAA’s Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and since their inception in 1926, the team has won five AP National Championships in 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 2001.

The University of Miami Hurricanes football team has a rich history and many accolades and after Alabama, Notre Dame and Oklahoma, Miami is ranked fourth on the list of all-time Associated Press National Poll Championships and two Hurricanes have won the Heisman Trophy, Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Toretta in 1992.

There are lots of College Football Hall of Famers who have ties to the University of Miami including Bennie Blades, Ed Reed, Vinny Testaverde, Gino Torretta and coaches Andy Gustafson and Jimmy Johnson as well as many others.

Several NFL Draft records have been set by Miami as well, such as the most number of first-round picks in a single draft and the most number of consecutive drafts with a first-round pick. As of the 2022 NFL Draft, 48 consecutive NFL Drafts dating back to 1975 have included at least one University of Miami player being selected.

As of the year 2022, the University of Miami has produced the most defensive lineman with 49 and is tied with the University of Southern California for the most wide receivers, 40.

Since 1980, nine former Miami Hurricanes players—Jim Otto, Ted Hendricks, Jim Kelly, Michael Irvin, Cortez Kennedy, Warren Sapp, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Edgerrin James—have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

After the 2021 season, the Miami Hurricanes will have a 644-370-19 record dating back to their first season in 1926 and the home games since 2008, the Hurricanes have traveled to Miami Gardens, Florida, about 22 miles (35 km) north of the main campus in Coral Gables to play at Hard Rock Stadium.
